Louis Caravaque: vida e obra

The Marseille Origins and the Russian Call

Marseilles, Provence, provides the starting point for Louis Caravaque. He is born into a family of painter-decorators, men who specialized in the practical, rugged task of painting ships from Gascony. The son follows this lineage, beginning his professional life at the Arsenal Galeries in Marseille. The trajectory shifts in 1715. In Paris, his portraits catch the eye of Peter Lefort. A contract is signed. The terms are specific: Caravaque will travel to Russia for three years to serve as a painter and to train Russian pupils.

The transition from the Mediterranean coast to the northern reaches of the Russian Empire marks a permanent change in his life. By 1716, he is in Russia, painting a portrait of Peter the Great at Astrakhan. This work is later engraved by Massard and by Langlois. He settles on Vasilyevsky Island near the Menshikov Palace, living in a house presented to him by Peter I in 1722. He moves between the imperial centers of St. Petersburg and Moscow.

Imperial Portraits and Courtly Life

The Russian court becomes his primary stage. During the reign of Anna Ioannovna, he is appointed the first painter at court. His salary reaches 2000 rubles a year. He paints her coronation portrait and participates in the decoration of the coronation celebrations. His brush captures the likenesses of the ruling elite, including Catherine I of Russia and Anna Ioannovna. He remains a fixture of the court through the reigns of Anna Leopoldovna and Elizabeth Petrovna.

His influence extends to the very image of the monarchy. He becomes the author of the official, approved image of Elizabeth as the new Empress. In May 1743, he receives a heavy responsibility: the execution of fourteen portraits of Elizabeth to be sent to Russian embassies abroad. His work spans several genres, including:

  • Official imperial portraits
  • Battle scenes related to the military victories in the Northern Wars
  • Interior designs
  • Religious icons, making him one of the first foreign artists to do so in the region

The Final Years in St. Petersburg

Caravaque’s presence in the Russian capital is long-lasting. He navigates the shifting political tides of the 18th century, maintaining his position as a dominant force in portrait painting. He dies in St. Petersburg on June 9, 1754. He is buried in the cemetery at St. Sampson Cathedral.
