The Garden Terrace at Haddon Hall

1849 · Oil On Canvas · The Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, Oxford

A stone staircase anchors the scene, its ornate railings climbing toward a massive tree that dominates the right side of the frame. Lush greenery spills over the steps, interrupted only by small bursts of red flowers at the base. A heavy, ominous sky hangs low over a vast, arid expanse, pressing down upon a caravan of travelers. The air feels thick with the scent of approaching rain or perhaps just the dry, suffocating dust of the dunes. The Peat Gatherers

1850 · Oil On Canvas · Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Birmingham

The sky hangs heavy with the weight of an impending storm, a swirling mass of dark, bruised clouds that seem to churn across the canvas. Below this turbulent ceiling, a rugged coastline stretches into the distance, its edges softened by a creeping mist that blurs the line between land and sea. The air feels thick, charged with the salt and dampness of a restless ocean. A small group of figures,…

David Cox, O Velho: o artista
