Anna Boberg: um retrato do artista
An Artistic Life of Diverse Pursuits
Anna Boberg was a Swedish artist and an autodidact who engaged in a wide variety of creative endeavors. Born Anna Scholander, she was the daughter of architect Fredrik Wilhelm Scholander and the granddaughter of Axel Nyström. While she was briefly enrolled at the Académie Julian in Paris, she did not receive formal training. Her artistic journey began in earnest in 1887, primarily through her work with watercolours.
Her talents extended far beyond the canvas; she was a person of many artistic pursuits, including work with ceramics, textiles, set design, and writing. Notably, she designed the Peacock Vase for Rörstrand in 1897 and created glass for Reijmyre glassworks. In the 1890s, she produced "tapestries," which were oil paintings on rough canvas used as wall decorations. She also contributed textiles for the 1900 World Fair in Paris and served as the writer and set designer for Wilhelm Stenhammar's opera Tirfing in 1898.
The Landscapes of Lofoten
Following a trip in 1901, the grandiose scenery of northern Norway became Boberg's main focus. She was particularly mesmerized by the Lofoten islands, a subject she would return to for the next 33 years. She often traveled to this region alone, staying in a small house on the Fyrön island by Svolvær that her husband, the architect Ferdinand Boberg, had designed for her in 1904.
Her depictions of the Lofoten landscapes and people, often captured during the wintertime, met with mixed reactions in Stockholm in 1903, but achieved significant success and positive feedback in Paris, where she exhibited in 1905. Her career in France was prolific, with her final exhibition taking place in 1927. In her later years, she accompanied her husband on journeys through Sweden to document cultural heritage, and the couple eventually resided in Paris before returning to Stockholm, where she passed away in 1935.
