His early years were marked by a transition from the world of commerce to the pursuit of fine art; following his father's passing, he briefly served an apprenticeship with the booksellers Oliver & Boyd in Edinburgh. However, the call of the canvas proved irresistible. In 1851, he enrolled at the Trustees Academy, where he studied under the guidance of Robert Scott Lauder and John Ballantyne. This formative period instilled in him a deep reverence for nature, leading him to spend extensive durations sketching and studying the outdoors, a practice that would become the heartbeat of his creative output.

MacWhirter's artistic journey was one of continuous expansion, both geographically and stylistically. While his roots remained firmly planted in the hilly countryside of Perthshire, his curiosity led him to traverse much of Europe and beyond.
