A Parisian Lineage
In the narrow streets of Paris, the name Baullery was woven into the fabric of the city's painting tradition. He was born into a family where the brush was a constant presence; his father, Jérôme, worked the same trade, ensuring that the craft was passed down through blood and habit. This was not a life of sudden fame, but one of steady, generational labor. Even his nephew, Jacques Blanchard , would eventually find his way into the studio, learning the nuances of light and form under Nicolas's watchful eye.
His hands were often occupied with the service of the city's spiritual centers. He left his mark on the Benedictine Blancs-Manteaux and the Chartreux, and his work found a place within the Third Order of Picpus. There is a quiet weight to a life spent decorating the walls of churches, moving between the sacred stillness of a nave and the precise, detailed work required for the 'petits Mays' of Notre-Dame de Paris. He was a man of the city, shaped by its stone and its prayers.
The Hand and the Engraving
His output was varied, moving from the large scale of church altarpieces to the fine, sharp lines of an engraver. He captured moments of political and religious shift, such as the entry of Henry IV into Paris in 1594, translating the movement of crowds and the gravity of the era into permanent ink. His work reflects a period of transition, where the brush had to navigate both the divine and the earthly politics of France.
The subjects he touched upon reveal a preoccupation with the human condition in its most vulnerable or most certain moments:
The quietude of a Nativité in the church at Chassey.
The tension of Christ before Pilate, a work once held in Charly-sur-Marne.
The communal warmth of an Adoration of the Shepherds, seen in both Fontenay-Trésigny and the cathedral in Toulouse.
The simple, grounded movement of a Peasant dance at Celleneuve.
A Legacy in Shadow and Light
Much of what we know of his hand comes from the traces left in the collections of others. Some works, like the depiction of Henry IV renouncing Protestantism in the basilique Saint-Denis, have been debated, shifting between being attributed to him or others as historians look closer at the brushwork. This uncertainty is part of the life of an artist from this era, where names sometimes blurred and styles merged. He remains a figure of the Parisian school, a painter who helped define the visual landscape of his time through both his direct commissions and the apprentices he trained.
