Thomas Kirk: portret artysty
The Life and Art of Thomas Kirk
Thomas Kirk was an English artist, book illustrator, and engraver of the late 18th century. A pupil of Richard Cosway, Kirk began exhibiting his work at the Royal Academy in 1785. His career was marked by significant contributions to literature, most notably through his illustrations for James Thomson's The Seasons in 1793. He was also employed consistently by Charles Cooke, providing illustrations for celebrated editions such as Cooke's Pocket Edition of English Poets between 1796 and 1798. His talent was recognized by his contemporaries, with Edward Dayes remarking that he "passed like a meteor through the region of art."
Kirk's artistic output included many famous engravings based upon his own work or the works of others, including Angelica Kauffman, Richard Westall, and Sir Joshua Reynolds. His original drawings are rare and often presented in an oval format. His technical skill was noted for its high-quality draughtsmanship, with some of his pictures described as "ornamented." His final works, including Evening and A Dream, were exhibited at the Royal Academy the year before his death.
Legacy and Final Years
The promising career of Thomas Kirk was cut short by illness. He died in 1797 of consumption. Following his death, his work was featured in Outlines from the figures and compositions upon the Greek, Roman, and Etruscan vases of the late Sir William Hamilton, which featured his drawings and engravings. His last known address was 8 Judd Place West, New Road, London.
