A Life of Diverse Pursuits
Jan Schouten was a Dutch priest, painter, museum director, and art historian. Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, his journey began with studies in theology and philosophy in Nijmegen. After being ordained as a priest in 1934, he initially worked as a religious teacher in Eindhoven. However, seeking a new path, he pursued training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tilburg. Following his departure from his religious order, he established himself as a visual artist in Gouda in 1949.
His professional life was deeply intertwined with the cultural fabric of Gouda. He served as a curator for the Catharina Gasthuis and was later appointed director of the Stedelijke Musea van Gouda. Beyond his administrative and religious roles, Schouten was a prolific author and illustrator, writing various books on the history of Gouda and publishing works under the pseudonym Jan Hadris.
Artistic Legacy and Works
Schouten's artistic practice was a lifelong passion that he returned to following his retirement as a museum director. His creative output included both paintings and illustrations for his own literary works. His notable paintings held in the Museum Gouda include:
In addition to his painting, Schouten was involved in the preservation of art, notably discovering a bust of Erasmus in Suriname and bringing it back to the Netherlands.
