Jakob Smits: artysta
A Life Shaped by the Campine
Jakob Smits began his life as the son of a decorator in Rotterdam, a beginning that likely instilled in him a fundamental respect for the craft of surface and ornament. His education was a wandering one, moving through the academies of Brussels, Munich, Vienna, and Rome. These early years were spent absorbing the formal rigors of European training before he eventually found his true footing. In 1882, he married his cousin Antje Doetje Kramer, and the couple settled in Amsterdam, where Smits undertook various painting tasks, including work for the museum Boijmans-Van Beuningen.
The trajectory of his life shifted when he moved toward the landscapes of Blaricum and Haarlem. It was during this period that he encountered Albert Neuhuys, a painter associated with The Hague School. Together, they explored the terrains of Drenthe and the Belgian Campine. This landscape left an indelible mark on him. In 1888, Smits established himself in Achterbos, in the region of Mol, purchasing a small farm that he would transform into Malvinahof. He married Malvina Dedeyn that same year, a union that brought both deep personal connection and significant social complication due to her family's disinheritance.
The Weight of Reality
Smits’s existence was often defined by a quiet, persistent struggle. He worked with a singular focus on what he described as his simple, symbolic, and real work. This period was marked by profound personal loss; in 1899, the deaths of his daughter Alice and his wife Malvina occurred within a few days of each other. His domestic life remained under constant pressure, particularly after a robbery in 1903 left his parents ruined, forcing him to support nine family members. Despite these hardships, he continued to produce work that sought a poetic truth.
His technical achievements were recognized on the international stage, notably in 1897 when he received a gold medal in Munich and Dresden for large water-colour paintings executed on a gold background. His output was not limited to landscapes; he produced many portraits, often centered on his family members. In 1901, he held his first individual exhibition in Antwerp. While critics offered praise, the commercial success of the show was absent, though the work De vader van de veroordeelde found a home in the Museum of Brussels.
The Molse School and Later Years
In 1907, Smits acted as an organizer for an international exhibition in Mol, bringing together sixty-eight painters from Germany, the Netherlands, and America. This event was significant enough to give rise to the term Molse School. His later years saw a shift in his creative output; after 1914, he ceased much of his traditional art production, turning instead to work as an engraver and painter with a renewed vision following the First World War. He also contributed to the community through civic leadership, serving as President of the Committee for assistance and food supplies for the canton of Mol.
The final years of his life were shadowed by physical decline, as he suffered from a painful cancer of the jaw starting in 1923. He died in Achterbos on 15 February 1928. He was a man decorated with honors, having been named a Knight in the Order of Leopold and later a Commander in the Order of the Crown. Today, his memory is preserved through the Jakob Smitsmuseum in Mol, housed in a converted old parish, ensuring that the man who found his soul in the Belgian landscape remains part of its history.
