The Stackyard (1925) av Paul Nash

The Stackyard

1925 · Oil · Herbert Art Gallery - Museum, Coventry

In this 1925 composition, we find ourselves in a peaceful corner of the English landscape. The scene is defined by the presence of several haystacks, their straw bodies rendered in soft, yellowish tones that catch the light of a calm day. These forms are arranged with a deliberate sense of balance, with one haystack positioned to the left, another centrally located, and a third toward the right. A small red…

1924 · Woodcut

In this 1924 woodcut, we witness a moment of profound, almost violent transition. The work, part of a series of illustrations for the book Genesis, moves away from the figurative to explore the very mechanics of existence. It is a stark, monochromatic vision where the separation of light from darkness is rendered not as a gentle dawn, but as a rhythmic, angular tension. The composition is dominated by a series…
