Cristoforo Caselli: et portrett av kunstneren

The Life of Cristoforo Caselli

Born in Parma around 1460, Cristoforo Caselli grew up in a world where art was a family trade. He was the son of Giovanni di Cristoforo, a man who likely shared his son's interest in painting. Known by several names, including Cristoforo da Parma or il Temperello, he moved through the Italian Renaissance with a quiet, steady presence. His life was rooted in the traditions of his home city, yet his ambitions eventually led him away from the familiar streets of Parma to seek work in other centers of creativity.

Family life was a central part of his existence. He was married to Antonia, and together they raised four children: Giovanni Battista, Polissena, Pietro Francesco, and Francesco Maria. His son Giovanni Battista followed a musical path, eventually serving as an organist in Parma. These domestic ties provided a sense of continuity even as his professional life took him to different regions. He lived through a period of significant change, eventually passing away in 1521.

Activity in Venice

Between 1489 and 1492, Caselli found his way to Venice, working as a journeyman to earn his living. This period marked a significant chapter in his life, as he moved through the Venetian art scene during a time of great activity. His presence in the city was documented from 1489 until 1495, a time when he was establishing his reputation among the skilled hands of the region.

During these years, he was part of a significant collaborative effort to decorate the Great Council Hall in the Doge's Palace. He worked alongside other notable painters of the era, including Giovanni Bellini and Alvise Vivarini. These artists shared the task of bringing color and form to the halls of Venetian power. Sadly, the specific works he contributed to this grand decoration were lost forever when a fire swept through the palace in 1577.

While much of his Venetian output was lost to history, his time in the city remains a vital part of his professional path. He also left behind an altar-piece, painted in 1495, which can still be found in the Sacristy of Santa Maria della Salute.

Mastery and Work in Parma

By 1496, Caselli had returned to his roots, establishing himself as a master in Parma. His presence in the city marked a period of significant local activity, where his hand could be found in various sacred spaces. In 1499, he contributed to the Sala del Consorzio with a painting of a Virgin and Child, positioned between the figures of Saints Hilarios and John the Baptist. That same year, his brush was also busy in the church of San Giovanni Evangelista, where he executed an Adoration of the Magi.

His connection to the city's religious life continued well into the next decade. In 1507, he worked on a monochrome of the Dead Christ for the cathedral. As the years passed, his influence in the region remained, and he may have shared a workspace with Parmigianino in Parma after 1503. This period of his life shows a man deeply embedded in the artistic fabric of his home city, moving between large-scale religious commissions and more intimate studies.

Notable Religious Artworks

Caselli’s devotion to religious subjects is visible in several pieces that have survived through the centuries. In the Gallery of Parma, one can find a Virgin and Child accompanied by SS. John the Baptist and Jerome, a work likely painted before 1489. This piece reflects his early development before his time spent working in Venice. Later, in 1495, he contributed an altar-piece that remains in the Sacristy of Santa Maria della Salute.

His work in Parma during the turn of the century shows a continued focus on sacred figures. In 1499, he executed a piece titled The Eternal, which was painted on a gold ground for a chapel in the Parma Cathedral. Around that same time, he painted Saint Paul and Saint James the Elder, a work that captures the solemnity of the era.

Where to See His Works Today

Finding the traces of Caselli's hand requires a bit of travel, as his surviving paintings are scattered across various collections. In his home region, the Gallery of Parma holds a Virgin and Child accompanied by SS. John the Baptist and Jerome. Nearby, the Galleria Nazionale in Parma preserves a different vision of the divine: The Virgin and Child Enthroned with God the Father and Saints Hilarius and John the Baptist.

His reach extended far beyond the borders of Parma, leaving pieces in several significant institutions. In Milano, you can find The Virgin and Child Enthroned with Two Musician Angels at the Museo Poldi Pezzelli. For those traveling further afield, the Detroit Institute of Arts houses Saint Paul and Saint James the Elder.
