Bernd Zimmer: liv og virke
The Artistic Evolution of Bernd Zimmer
Bernd Zimmer is a German painter, photographer, and graphic artist. His professional journey began with an apprenticeship as a publishing bookseller at the Carl Hanser Verlag in Munich, followed by a role as a graphic design assistant at the same institution. After moving to Berlin to work as a book designer for the Klaus Wagenbach publishing house, he pursued studies in philosophy and religious studies at the Freie Universität Berlin. His artistic practice gained momentum following a five-month stay in Mexico and the southern United States. In 1977, he co-founded the artist self-help gallery Galerie am Moritzplatz in Berlin.
His diverse body of work includes various series and cycles. His travels to the Sahara inspired desert paintings that explore formal reduction and abstract color field painting. His interest in astronomy and physics led to the creation of his Cosmos images. Other significant thematic explorations include the Reflexions-Bilder, inspired by the lakes of Brandenburg, and the Kristallwelten series, which was influenced by the lush vegetation of Asia and Chinese painting and philosophy. Additionally, his travels to South India and his observations of Hindu temple pillars contributed to the development of the STOA169 project.
