Constant Montald: liv og virke
The Life and Art of Constant Montald
Born in Ghent, Belgium, Constant Montald was a versatile artist who worked as a painter, sculptor, muralist, draftsperson, and teacher. His early education began at the technical school of Ghent, where he studied decorative painting, while simultaneously attending evening classes at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. His talent was recognized early when he won a competition and a grant that allowed him to study in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts. During this period, he created his first monumental canvas, The Human Struggle, which was later donated to the city of Ghent and displayed in the Palace of Justice.
Montald's career was marked by significant achievements, including winning the Belgian Prix de Rome for his work Diagoras in triumph carried by his sons, victors of the Olympic Games of Ancient Greece. His travels took him through Italy and Egypt, and he spent time working in Rome. His artistic output included large-scale works such as Social Contradictions and The Eolian Harps. In 1896, he began a long tenure as a professor of decorative arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, a position he held until 1932. His students included notable Belgian painters such as René Magritte and Paul Delvaux.
Style and Monumental Works
As his career progressed, Montald's style evolved from being influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood toward a focus on integrating humanity with floral environments. His later works often featured:
Montald was a co-founder of the group L'art monumental, which promoted a decorative monumental style connected to architecture. His contributions to public spaces included designs for the Jubelpark Complex and decorative canvases for the Leuven Theater. Other notable works include The Nest, various portraits of Emile Verhaeren, and stained glass window designs. He was a member of the Royal Academy of Belgium and was knighted into the Legion of Honour for his work France and Belgium suckle their children on the Fount of Goodness and Justness.
