Born in Wakefield, United Kingdom, Roland Vivian Pitchforth was a painter and teacher whose career was deeply shaped by the historical upheavals of the twentieth century. After studying at the Leeds School of Art, he served in the Wakefield Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery during World War One, an experience that resulted in lifelong hearing damage. During the Second World War, Pitchforth served as an official British war artist. His commissions began with scenes of bomb damage around London for the War Artists' Advisory Committee. His focus later shifted to maritime warfare after being assigned to the Admiralty in 1943, leading him to paint naval vessels and convoys in locations such as Gibraltar and the Azores. In 1945, he was dispatched to the Far East to record Allied campaigns in Burma and Ceylon, witnessing the capture of Rangoon. In his later years, he continued to exhibit his work globally and held posts at Chelsea Polytechnic and the Sir John Cass College of Art until his retirement.
