Leo Putz: leven en werk

The Light of Merano and Paris

Merano, South Tyrol, serves as the starting point for Leo Putz in 1869. The son of a mayor and spa owner, he moves to Munich at sixteen, driven by an impulse that bypasses his father's wishes. Under the guidance of his stepbrother, Robert Poetzelberger, the foundations of drawing take shape. This early training leads him to the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, where history painter Gabriel von Hackl provides instruction. The scene shifts to Paris between 1891 and 1892. At the Académie Julian, the atmosphere changes under the influence of William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Benjamin Constant. Here, the seeds of Impressionism begin to take root in his practice.

Returning to Munich, he enters the studio of Paul Hoecker. The academic rigidity of the past begins to fracture. In 1897, he joins the Munich Secession, a move that places him at the center of a shifting artistic landscape. He becomes part of the Die Scholle group in 1899, a collective born from the studio of Hocker. His work during this period finds a secondary life in the pages of the magazine Jugend, where his illustrations reach a wider public.

The Summer at Hartmannsberg

Between 1909 and 1914, the focus narrows to Schloss Hartmannsberg near Chiemgau. The air is different here. This period marks the creation of his famous series, the "Boat Pictures" and the "Bathers." He practices plein-air painting, capturing light as it hits figures by the lakeside. The subjects are often beautiful young women, reclining or boating, rendered with a focus on the immediate effects of sunlight. It is a time of clarity and specific, light-filled imagery.

The palette undergoes a radical transformation when he moves to South America in 1929. Living in Brazil and Argentina, specifically in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the colors deepen. The tropical environment forces a change. His work begins to reflect the exotic plant life and the characters of the region. In 1931, he accepts a professorship at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes in Rio de Janeiro, teaching composition to students like Roberto Burle Marx. The light is no longer the soft Bavarian glow but something stronger and more intense.

Shadows and the Final Return

The political climate of Europe forces a sudden retreat. By 1933, he returns to Germany, but the atmosphere has turned hostile. His South American works are targeted by National Socialist propaganda; they are labeled as "degenerate art." The Gestapo begins interrogations in 1936. He is officially banned from working in Germany and is forced to flee back to his birthplace, Merano. The freedom of his earlier years is replaced by the constraints of surveillance.

His final years are spent focusing on different subjects: castles, villages, and landscapes of South Tyrol. He turns toward works in plaster, a shift in medium that accompanies his withdrawal from the broader art world. He dies in Merano in 1940 following an operation. His legacy remains held in collections such as the Lenbachhaus in Munich and the Museu de Arte do Rio.
