James Ward: leven en werk

A Life in Art and Education

Born in Belfast, United Kingdom, James Ward was a painter, artist, writer, and teacher who played a significant role in the Irish and British art scenes during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After studying at the Belfast Government School of Art, he received a scholarship to the National Art Training School in London. During his time there, he worked with Sir Edward Poynter and served as the sole assistant to Sir Frederic Leighton, contributing to the large-scale murals Peace and War.

Ward’s career was marked by a dedication to art education. He served as the head of the Macclesfield School of Art and later became the headmaster of the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, where he introduced new painting classes in wood carving and spirit fresco. His expertise was further reflected in his published works, which included:

Mural Works and Legacy

One of Ward's most notable achievements was the creation of twelve frescoes in the rotunda of Dublin City Hall. These murals, completed between 1914 and 1918, consist of eight scenes depicting the early history of Dublin and four heraldic panels representing the four provinces of Ireland. In executing these works, he was assisted by students such as Harry Clarke and Seán Keating.

Throughout his professional life, Ward exhibited his work at the Royal Academy of Arts, the Belfast Art Society, and the Royal Hibernian Academy. His designs were also recognized at the 1878 Paris Exposition and the 1884 London Health Exhibition. Following his retirement, he traveled to England and eventually to Southern Rhodesia, where he died.
