Ruth Aiko Asawa, geboren in 1926 op een boerderij in Norwalk, Californië, groeide uit tot een van de meest innovatieve beeldhouwers van de 20e eeuw. Haar verhaal is niet louter een artistieke reis, maar een getuigenis van veerkracht, diepgaand gevormd door de turbulente gebeurtenissen van haar vroege jaren. Als dochter van Japanse immigranten ervoer Asawa de onrechtvaardigheid en het leed van de Tweede Wereldoorlog aan den lijve, toen zij en haar familie gedwongen werden hun huis te verlaten en werden opgesloten in Japanse interneringskampen – eerst bij de renbaan van Santa Anita, en later in het Rohwer War Relaties Center in Arkansas. Deze ervaring, een diepe wond veroorzaakt door vooroordelen, zou een blijvende onderstroom vormen in haar leven en werk, en haar toewijding aan sociale rechtvaardigheid en de overtuiging dat kunst toegankelijk moet zijn voor iedereen, aanwakkeren. Binnen de muren van het kamp, te midden van ontbering en onzekerheid, ontdekte Asawa een ontluikende artistieke vonk; ze kreeg tekenlessen van mede-internen die professioneel illustrator waren – een kleine daad van verzet en creativiteit die bloeide in het aangezicht van de tegenslag.
