A Life in Amsterdam
The life of Juriaen Pool began in the shadows of the Amsterdam orphanage, known as the Burgerweeshuis. Having lost his parents by the age of three, he grew up within the walls of this institution, where he was eventually permitted to train as a painter. His father, Jurriaan Pool the elder, had been a silversmith from Silesia, leaving behind a name that carried traces of Polish roots.
In 1693, his path became closely entwined with Rachel Ruysch. Their marriage in Buiksloot brought him into a circle of scientific and cultural significance, as Rachel was the daughter of the anatomist Frederik Ruysch. Together, they navigated the professional landscapes of The Hague and Düsseldorf. Between 1703 and 1713, he served as a court painter in Düsseldorf under the Elector Palatine, Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz.
The Art of the Portrait
Pool focused his attention on the faces of the Amsterdam elite. His work often captured the quiet dignity of his subjects through oil on canvas, frequently using a plain-weave linen with a thick, reddish ground preparation. He had a way of placing figures in settings that suggested status, such as a young girl dressed in white silk and pearls, seated in a landscape as a shepherdess.
His brushwork often interacted with the presence of his wife's work. In one notable portrait of himself, Rachel, and their son Jan Willem, he is depicted standing behind his wife, pointing toward an easel that holds one of her still lifes. This arrangement shows a man who occupied the space behind the scenes, supporting a career that reached even greater heights than his own.
Legacy and Movement
Working within the traditions of the Dutch Golden Age and the Baroque, Pool’s output was defined by the precision required for portraiture. He was a member of the Confrerie Pictura in The Hague and joined the Guild of St. Luke. While he taught others, such as Gerhard Jan Palthe, much of his historical footprint is tied to the family unit he built.
His career ended in Amsterdam, the same city where he was baptized. He left behind a body of work that includes:
- Portraits of the Dutch upper class and children.
- Group portraits featuring his family members.
- Works that utilized the textures of silk, lace, and skin to ground his subjects in reality.
