Jens Peter Møller: gyvenimas ir kūryba
Early Life, Family and Training
Born in Faaborg in 1783, Jens Peter Møller was the son of a potter, Peder Larsen Møller, and Jacobine née Due. His early years were shaped by a move to Eckernförde in Schleswig, where he was raised by a relative named Hansen. This formative period in Schleswig saw him begin his practical engagement with color and surface, serving as an apprentice house painter from 1799 to 1803. It was a humble start for a man who would eventually master the delicate nuances of landscape and the technical rigors of conservation.
In 1803, Møller moved to Copenhagen to pursue a formal education at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. His arrival at the Academy marked the beginning of a disciplined academic ascent. He first entered the studio of Nicolai Abildgaard, where he was the artist's first student. This foundational training provided the technical grounding necessary for his later diversifications as an etcher and landscape painter. His education continued under the guidance of Christian August Lorentzen, who helped refine his understanding of the natural world.
Travels and Professional Career
In 1810, a travel grant, supported in part by the Prince, allowed Møller to look beyond the borders of Denmark. His path took him first to Brussels and then to Paris, where his interests expanded from the canvas to the science of preservation. In the French capital, he dedicated himself to the technical intricacies of conservation, studying under Lavaltier, Thomas Henry, and Jean-Louis Anselin. This period of study was not merely academic; it led to practical experience as a conservator at Musée Napoleon.
Upon his return, Møller’s expertise in both creation and restoration secured him a steady presence within the Danish institutional landscape. By 1814, he had been appointed curator at the royal collection of paintings. His professional life was marked by a variety of responsibilities that bridged the gap between the studio and the academy. He spent several years serving as a drawing teacher for midshipmen, translating his technical knowledge into instruction for the next generation of sailors and artists alike.
His career eventually reached the highest levels of academic recognition when he was named a professor at the Art Academy in Copenhagen. This position allowed him to influence the direction of landscape art through his teaching and his advocacy for cash prizes in the field. He remained a central figure in the Danish art world, moving between the meticulous work of a conservator and the formal duties of a professor.
Patrons, Commissions and Roles
Møller’s professional life was defined by a close relationship with the Danish monarchy. Christian VIII of Denmark acted as a patron, providing support that helped shape the artist's trajectory. This connection to the court was further solidified through his technical expertise in preservation. In 1842, he was awarded the Ingenio et arti medal, a recognition earned for his skillful restoration of a portrait of Queen Caroline Amalie.
His responsibilities extended well beyond the easel, moving into the administrative and supervisory realms of art conservation. From 1814, he served as a curator for the royal collection of paintings. This institutional involvement grew over the decades; by 1834, he had taken on the role of inspector for Count Carl Moltke's painting collection. Later, from about 1841, he was tasked with the supervision of the paintings housed within the royal castles.
In addition to these official appointments, Møller contributed to the education of the next generation of painters. He served as a drawing teacher for midshipmen and held a position as a professor at the Art Academy in Copenhagen. His influence within the Academy was marked by his commitment to the landscape genre, where he introduced cash prizes to encourage the study of the natural world.
Key Works and Collections
Møller’s landscape compositions found a significant place within the most important Danish institutions. The Royal Painting Collection holds eight of his works, reflecting his enduring presence in the national canon. Similarly, the Statens Museum for Kunst maintains a collection of eight paintings by the artist, ensuring his vision of the natural world remains accessible to the public. These holdings represent a substantial portion of his output and highlight his standing among his contemporaries.
His brushwork captured specific topographical details, from the rugged heights of the Alps to the local Danish terrain. Notable among his compositions are the four major landscapes depicting Switzerland and Tyrol, which were painted for Christiansborg Palace. These large-scale works offer a sense of the varied light and atmosphere found in those regions. Other significant pieces include his depictions of Wetterhorn and Vejen ved Hammermøllen, works that demonstrate his ability to translate specific environments onto canvas.
