Moses Strikes the Rock

1587 · Oil · Kunsthistorisches Museum, Viena

The air in the scene feels heavy, thick with the dust of the desert and the desperation of a people. At the center, a muscular figure leans into his task, his staff striking the unyielding surface of a rugged rock. From that impact, water erupts. It is a sudden, life-giving surge that cuts through the earthy browns and ochres of the parched landscape. The composition pulls the eye through a…

Jan Snellinck: gyvenimas ir kūryba

A Life Woven into the Fabric of Antwerp

Jan Snellinck lived through a period of profound change in the Low Countries, moving between faiths and cities as the political tides shifted. Born in Mechelen around 1548, he was raised in a family where art was a daily presence. His father, Daniël Snellinck I, was a painter and a hawker, and Jan began his own training by studying watercolor painting under him. This early foundation in delicate, fluid media would stay with him throughout his long life.

His personal connections placed him at the very heart of the Flemish art community. Through his mother, Cornelia Verhulst, he was related to the Brueghel family. His sister, Mayken, married Pieter Coecke van Aelst, and through this lineage, Jan moved in circles that included some of the most significant names of the era. In 1574, he married Helena de Jode in Antwerp, a union that further linked him to the world of printmaking, as she was the daughter of the publisher Gerard de Jode.

Life in Antwerp required both skill and adaptability. Jan was not only a creator but also an active art dealer and collector. He navigated the complexities of the Guild of Saint Luke, eventually becoming a master there in 1577. His religious convictions also mirrored the era's unrest; he converted to the Calvinist faith, only to return to Catholicism after the Spanish regained control of Flanders.

The Art of War and Devotion

While many remember him for his larger works, Jan Snellinck possessed a versatility that allowed him to work across many different formats. He was a draughtsman, a designer of prints, and a creator of designs for large-scale textile works. His ability to translate complex scenes into patterns for weavers helped decorate the halls of power in Antwerp.

He earned a specific reputation as a painter of battles. In an age of conflict, he was recognized as a leading figure in capturing the movement and chaos of warfare, earning him a place among the first Flemish war artists. His records show a particular interest in sieges, with several paintings of such events noted in historical collections. Beyond the battlefield, his hand was found in religious compositions, particularly scenes of the crucifixion, and in allegorical works that required a deep understanding of symbolism.

His professional reach extended to the highest levels of government and nobility. He received commissions from Peter Ernst I von Mansfeld-Vorderort and the Archdukes Albrecht and Isabella. One of his notable achievements involved creating designs for a set of seven large works intended to celebrate the entry of the Archdukes into Antwerp in 1599. These pieces were so highly regarded that they were later gifted to the royal collections of King Philip III or Philip IV.

A Lasting Legacy in Antwerp

Jan Snellinck's career was marked by a long period of productivity and a deep integration into the civic life of Antwerp. He became a burger of the city in 1597, cementing his status as a permanent fixture of the local community. His influence even reached into the next generation; he trained many pupils, including the notable Abraham Janssens, who would go on to become a major figure in Flemish painting.

Even as he aged, his connection to the art world remained strong through his family and his collections. He left behind an extensive collection of art, a testament to his life as both a maker and a connoisseur. When he passed away in Antwerp on 1 October 1638, his wife died only five days later, marking the end of a long chapter in the history of the Flemish school.
