Helen Torr: menininkas
The Life and Art of Helen Torr
Known by the nickname "Reds" due to her hair color, Helen Torr was an American painter and draftsperson. Born in Roxborough, Philadelphia, she pursued her artistic education through a scholarship to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where she studied under William Merritt Chase, and later at Drexel University. Her creative practice focused on the creation of oil paintings and charcoal-based drawings.
Torr's life was marked by a deep connection to the artistic community, maintaining friendships with figures such as Georgia O'Keeffe and Arthur Dove. She lived a life of economic hardship, at times residing aboard a sailboat anchored in Halesite, Long Island, and later in a cottage in Centerport. Following the death of her husband, she requested that her body of work be destroyed; however, much of her work was preserved and donated by her sister.

Throughout her lifetime, Torr was reluctant to exhibit her work, with only two public exhibitions occurring during her life, including a group show at Alfred Stieglitz's gallery, An American Place, in 1933. Her legacy was further recognized through posthumous exhibitions, such as those held at the Graham Gallery in New York and the Heckscher Museum of Art.
Her artistic output is represented in several notable collections, including:
