Landscape with Wild Beasts (1629) aut. Roelant Savery

Landscape with Wild Beasts

1629 · Oil · Kunsthistorisches Museum, Viena

In this 1629 landscape, we find ourselves drawn into a secluded realm where the boundaries between the human and the animal kingdom feel remarkably thin. The scene unfolds before a structure that suggests the presence of a temple or perhaps a distant castle, providing a sense of permanence against the movement of the wild. Various animals, including birds, deer, and horses, inhabit this space, moving through a landscape that feels…

Mountain Landscape with Woodcutters

1610 · Oil On Panel · Kunsthistorisches Museum, Viena

A rugged mountain scene dominates the composition, defined by towering rock formations and spindly trees that draw the eye upward toward a misty, distant peak. Small figures are scattered throughout the landscape, engaged in the physical labor of woodcutting amidst the craggy terrain. The verticality of the cliffs creates a sense of scale, contrasting the immense, jagged geology with the minute, industrious presence of the human workers. Light enters from…

Paradiesische Tiergruppe

1607 · Oil On Panel · Bavarijos valstybinės paveikslų kolekcijos, Miunchas

In Paradiesische Tiergruppe, Roelant Savery presents a dense, multi-layered landscape where the natural order is intentionally suspended. The composition brings together a surreal assembly of species that would not naturally coexist in such proximity.
