Architecture & Design
Designed by Caruso St John and opened in January 2000, the gallery building itself is a work of art. Officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II, its stark yet elegant design has garnered numerous architectural awards. Clad in pale terracotta with extensive use of concrete and Douglas fir wood, the five-story structure offers a unique spatial experience. The surrounding public square was designed by Richard Wentworth and Catherine Yass.
History & Background
The New Art Gallery Walsall replaced the town’s previous gallery and arts centre, representing a significant investment in regional cultural infrastructure with £21 million of public funding. It is funded by Walsall Council and Arts Council England, ensuring free access for all visitors. Peter Jenkinson served as its first Director, followed by Stephen Snoddy (appointed in 2005).
