About Peterborough Museum & Art Gallery
Peterborough Museum & Art Gallery is a fascinating institution dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich history and artistic heritage of Peterborough and its surrounding region. Managed by Vivacity on behalf of the city council, it’s an integral part of the Greater Fens Museum Partnership.
History & Architecture
The museum is housed in a beautiful building with roots stretching back to 1816, though parts of the cellar date even further back to the 16th century. Originally a private house, it was acquired and generously donated by Sir Percy Malcolm Stewart to the Peterborough Natural History, Scientific and Archaeological Society in 1931. The art gallery was added in 1939. Prior to becoming a museum, the building served as Peterborough’s first hospital from 1857 until 1928.
