He was the second son born from the second marriage of his father, Gustav Adolf Heffner, a farmer. His mother was Theresia Seubert. He grew up in a large family, born into a household that included eight siblings and two step-siblings. The family lived on a farm where the parents worked the difficult Muschelkalk soil.
