Marie Wiegmann: 작가의 초상화
A Life in Brushstrokes
Marie Elisabeth Wiegmann began her life in Silberbeg, Silesia. Her hands found their way to the Düsseldorf Academy in 1841, where she sat as a pupil under Hermann Stilke. Later, she studied with Karl Ferdinand Sohn. These years of training shaped how she saw the light on a face or the fold of a garment. She moved through Germany, England, Holland, and Italy, carrying her observations with her.
In 1841, she married Rudolf Wiegmann. They eventually settled in Düsseldorf. Her travels were not merely for leisure; between 1843 and 1845, a study trip to Italy allowed her to look closely at the art of that land. This period of looking deeply influenced the way she approached her subjects.
The Subjects of Her Canvas
Her work often turned toward the human form and the stories told in folklore. For a time, between 1846 and 1850, she focused on paintings rooted in mythical and fairytale tales. She drew from late romantic literary models, creating pieces like those based on Ludwig Uhland’s poem, The Elves. Her illustrations even found a place in the pages of St Nicholas: An Illustrated Magazine For Young Folks in 1883.
Beyond stories, she was a painter of people and quiet moments. Some of her known works include:
- A Venetian Lady
- A Young Girl with Roses
- A French Woman of 1792
- Portrait of Karl Schnasse
Recognition and Legacy
Her career lasted more than fifty years. During this time, she earned a gold medal in Berlin for one of her works. Her portraits were held in places like the National Gallery of Berlin, where pieces such as A Venetian Lady were established in 1876. She left behind a body of work that reflects the traditions of the Düsseldorf School.
She lived until 1893. Her life was marked by the steady application of paint to canvas, moving from the lessons of her teachers to her own established presence in the art circles of Europe.
