Georg Vilhelm Arnold Groth lived his life within the borders of Copenhagen. Born to a pharmacist and a mother from a merchant family, his early years were spent in the quiet rhythms of the city. He studied at the drawing school of Frederik Ferdinand Helsted before moving toward more formal training. His time at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts was interrupted by the Second Schleswig War, where he served as a conscript. Groth’s work often focused on the shores of Lillebælt and Hellebæk. He did not seek to idealize these locations but rather to record them. His paintings, often executed in oil on canvas or even on mahogany, show a commitment to the textures of the Danish coast. In works like Hede med en Mose, there is a focus on the dampness of the bog and the heavy atmosphere of the heath. This piece was notable enough to be acquired for the Royal Collection in 1874.
His approach involved a certain level of intellectual engagement with the changing art world. He participated in discussions with radical intellectuals, known as the "Literalists," around 1880. In his writing, such as Dansk Kunst i Forhold til Udlandets, he argued that each era must find its own contemporary influences rather than clinging to the past. This belief is visible in his technique, which moved away from grander, more staged compositions toward a more humble, pared-back observation of nature.
