The Studio of Andrea Belvedere
Naples, around 1677, provides the backdrop for the emergence of Tommaso Realfonso. He enters the professional sphere through the studio of Andrea Belvedere, a master whose influence shapes the young painter's early trajectory. By 1694, the landscape of Realfonso's training shifts when Belvedere moves to Spain, leaving the artist to establish his own presence within the Neapolitan tradition. It is during this period that he acquires the moniker Masillo, a name that follows him through his professional life.
His hands find their purpose in the meticulous arrangement of the inanimate. He specializes in the quiet drama of still-life paintings, focusing his attention on the textures of fruit and the delicate structures of flowers. There is a specific precision in his handling of organic matter, a skill that allows him to capture the weight of a pomegranate or the curve of a pear with startling clarity.
Still Life and Landscape
The work of Realfonso moves between the intimate and the expansive. While his reputation rests heavily on his ability to render the tactile details of a banquet, he also turns his gaze toward vedute. These landscape studies offer a different perspective, moving away from the concentrated intensity of his fruit pieces toward the broader compositions of the natural world. His technical approach remains consistent, whether he is documenting the skin of a fig or the distant horizon of a landscape.
His compositions often feature a specific variety of subjects that demand careful observation:
- Pomegranates, apples, pears, grapes, and figs.
- Birds and small creatures, such as squirrels, integrated into the arrangement.
- Floral elements that provide a sense of seasonal immediacy.
Legacy in the Collections
The physical evidence of his skill survives in significant collections, such as the Museo Correale in Sorrento. His paintings, executed in oil on canvas, remain as tangible records of his technical development. One notable work, Still Life with Pomegranates, Apples, Pears, Grapes, Figs and Birds, exists within the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, representing the scale and ambition of his later output. He remains a figure defined by this specific mastery of the still life, a painter who found his voice in the silent, detailed study of the world's textures.
