A Life in Motion

William Delacour lived a life that moved across borders and through many different forms of visual expression. Born in France around 1700, he eventually found his way to Great Britain, where he began making his mark on the theatrical world. By 1741, he was already active, using his hands to shape the scenery for operas, including those by Giovanni Battista Pescetti. He worked in the shadows of the stage, designing the environments that allowed drama to unfold, and he may have contributed his vision to the productions of John Rich.

His career was never static. He shifted from the grand scale of the theater to the intimate details of the drawing room. By 1752, he was known as a portrait painter, working with both oil and pastels to capture the likenesses of his subjects. He moved through cities like Dublin, Glasgow, and Edinburgh, adapting his skills to whatever the moment required of him.

The Language of Ornament

Around 1750, Delacour turned his attention to the intricate patterns that defined the aesthetic of his era. He published eight books known as Books of Ornaments, which focused on the Rococo style. These works helped spread a specific sense of design and decoration through the hands of others. His influence extended beyond the canvas and into the very fabric of interior spaces.

His professional reach included several distinct areas of expertise:

  • Theatrical scenery design for opera and stage productions
  • Portraiture using oil paints and pastels
  • Landscape painting across various British cities
  • Interior decoration for private residences, such as the drawing room of Milton House
  • Instruction and leadership within formal art education

The Final Years in Edinburgh

In March 1760, Delacour settled in Edinburgh, a move that marked a significant chapter in his professional life. He was appointed the first Master of the Trustees' Academy, a position that allowed him to shape the next generation of artists through formal education. This role solidified his importance to the artistic community in Scotland, moving him from a traveling practitioner to a central figure in institutional art training.

He continued to work for private clients, bringing his eye for design to the homes of those who sought his specific touch. When he died in Edinburgh in 1767, he left behind a legacy that spanned from the ephemeral beauty of the stage to the permanent collections of museums like the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum.
