A Life in Alkmaar
Pieter Plas entered the world on March 2, 1810, in Alkmaar, born to Laurens Plas, a painter of houses and coaches, and Cornelia Berger. His early years were defined by the practicalities of his father's trade, as he worked within the family company until the age of twenty-four. This foundation in manual craft provided a grounded perspective that would later inform his approach to the canvas.
In 1835, his interests shifted toward more formal artistic pursuits under the guidance of the urban architect Adrianus de Visser. This period of transition led him to study for two years with Jan van Ravenswaay and Willem Bodeman. Traveling through Drenthe alongside Ravenswaay, Plas began to develop a keen eye for the natural world. He eventually settled in Alkmaar, moving briefly to Haarlem between 1846 and 1848, before returning to his birthplace for the final years of his life.
The Painter and the Educator
Plas was a man of both creation and instruction. While he is recognized as a Dutch landscape and animal painter, he also dedicated himself to the cultivation of others. As a member of the Kunst zij uns doel artist community, he took on the responsibility of running a painting school for the Alkmaar drawing cooperative. His influence extended through his students, including Bernardus Gerardus ten Berge and Hendrik Loth.
His personal life was anchored by his marriage in 1841 to Catharina Alida ten Berge, with whom he raised five children. His work often focused on the quiet, unadorned moments of rural existence. He captured the stillness of livestock and the movement of water through various subjects:
- The rhythmic labor found in Milking time.
- The presence of animals in Two bulls at a fence with a swallow.
- The pastoral scenes of Sheep and goats in a Dutch landscape, painted around 1844.
- The solitary focus of his Zelfportret, an oil on panel from 1835 held by the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar.
A Final Chapter
The trajectory of Plas's life ended prematurely when he died on October 1, 1853. Though his career was relatively brief, his output as a lithographer and painter left a tangible mark on the local art scene of Alkmaar. His ability to render figure and genre paintings remains documented in auction records, where works such as Milking time have reached significant values, reflecting the enduring interest in his depictions of nineteenth-century Dutch life.
