In the late 1970s, he began using oil paint more frequently and his work featured allusions to painters such as Henri Matisse, Édouard Manet, and Francisco Goya. This period was also notable for the use of canvas collage, a method involving the application of separately painted patches of canvas onto the main canvas. While teaching at the Victoria College of the Arts in Melbourne, he produced the Oceania series, which incorporates elements of native Oceanic art.

Walker's professional achievements include winning the 1976 John Moores Painting Prize and receiving a nomination for the Turner Prize in 1985. Beyond his studio practice, he held a significant academic role as the head of the graduate painting program at Boston University from 1992 to 2015.
