Engelbart Bokhorst:アーティストの肖像画

The Deventer Artisan

The air in Deventer carries the weight of tradition, a lineage of craft passed from father to son. Born in 1871, Engelbartus Bokhorst enters a world where the brush and the kiln are inseparable from the family name. His father, Hendrik Gerrit Bokhorst, runs a painting business, a workshop where the boundaries between fine art and decorative craft begin to blur. Young Bart studies at the Deventer-Teeken-Academie under Jan Striening, absorbing the fundamentals of line and form. He earns a silver medal, a mark of early promise, before the pull of something more tactile draws him away from the canvas and toward the clay.

By 1889, the focus shifts. The pursuit of plateelkunst—the art of pottery and faience—leads him across the border into Belgium. In the studios of Antwerp and Brussels, the young painter learns how color behaves on fired earthenware. This technical hunger eventually brings him to the Plateelbakkerij Rozenburg in Den Haag. Under the direction of Th. A. C. Collenbrander, Bokhorst finds himself at the intersection of Jugendstil and Art Deco, translating the fluid, organic rhythms of the era onto the surfaces of ceramics.

A Life in Color and Clay

The work of Engelbart Bokhorst is defined by its versatility, moving seamlessly from the intimate scale of a ceramic vessel to the monumental scale of architectural decoration. His hands are as comfortable with a brush for a portrait as they are with the specialized tools required for earthenware decoration or stained glass restoration. His career is marked by several distinct technical roles:

  • Painter and Draftsperson: Creating portraits and landscape scenes.
  • Ceramicist and Pottery Painter: Specializing in Jugendstil and Art Deco designs.
  • Decorative Artist: Executing wall paintings and large-scale tiled decorations.
  • Commercial Designer: Creating advertising imagery for local industries like the Jacob Bussink cookie factory.

One of his most significant technical achievements involves the Royal Palace in The Hague. He contributed to the man-high tiled wall decorations for the palace bathroom, a project of such scale and quality that parts of the work eventually found their way into the Rijksmuseum collection. This period marks the height of his ability to marry functional architecture with high-style ornamentation.

The Return to Deventer

Death and duty pull him back to his roots. Following the passing of his father in 1891, Bokhorst returns to Deventer to manage the family painting business alongside his brother, Johan. He brings a new sensibility to the workshop, injecting the specialized knowledge of plateelkunst into the family's traditional painting trade. His life becomes a blend of the commercial and the artistic; he designs theater costumes, sets, and tableaux vivants, while also serving the community as a board member of the Historisch Museum Deventer and a deacon in the Dutch Reformed Church.

His later years are spent navigating the complexities of a changing aesthetic landscape, moving from the flowing lines of Jugendstil into the more structured geometry of Art Deco. He remains a fixture of Deventer's cultural life until his death in 1939. He is buried in the Steenbrugge Cemetery on Raalterweg, leaving behind a legacy that spans the spectrum from the delicate surface of a decorated plate to the grand walls of a royal residence.
