The Life and Career of Alexander Kircher
Alexander Kircher was an Austrian-German marine and landscape painter and illustrator. Born in Trieste, which was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the time, he originally intended to become a naval officer in the Austro-Hungarian Navy, but a foot injury prevented this path. He instead studied painting at the Berlin Academy under Hans Gude and Hermann Eschke, focusing on marine painting. His travels took him across Europe, Asia, North America, and Egypt, allowing him to create various paintings, drawings, and illustrations.
Kircher's professional life included serving as a professor at the Art Academy in Trieste between 1895 and 1900. He was a prolific illustrator for several publications, including The Leipziger Illustrierte Zeitung and the weekly Reclams universe. His work also appeared in the writings of the Austrian and German fleet associations. He was a recipient of the Spanish Order of Isabella the Catholic in 1909.
Maritime Themes and Legacy
The artist's work often depicted significant naval subjects, including the Austro-Hungarian Navy and the Imperial German Navy, and was commissioned by monarchs such as Emperor Franz Joseph I and Emperor Wilhelm II. His paintings were featured on large passenger ships, in the offices of shipping companies, and in private collections. He once owned a steam yacht named Romana, which he used to collect motives and draw maritime objects, such as fleet parades, for his art.
His artistic output included a series of one hundred paintings documenting the development of German shipping over a millennium. Many of his works are preserved in various institutions, including:
