The History of Hereford Museum and Art Gallery
The Hereford Museum and Art Gallery is located in the cathedral city of Hereford, Herefordshire, England. It opened in 1874 through the generosity of Sir James Rankin MP. His contribution helped establish the institution as a repository for the region's history and natural sciences. The museum is part of Herefordshire Council's Museum Service.
Since its establishment, the institution has maintained a permanent collection of approximately 1,000 objects. These items are held to preserve the local history and decorative arts of the area. The museum's origins are closely linked to the Woolhope Naturalists' Field Club, which was founded in 1851 for the study of the natural history of Herefordshire and its adjacent districts.
The Architecture of the Historic Building
The building was designed by local architect Frederick Roberston Kempson, FRIBA. Its design was heavily influenced by the Venetian Gothic revival style. The structure was completed at a cost of £7,600. The facade features intricate carvings of animals, plants, and signs of the zodiac.
The architectural significance of the site is recognized through its official designations. The building is a Grade II listed structure. It received its Grade II listing on 22 October 1973. Records also identify the building as a Grade II* listed building.
Major Collections and Museum Galleries
The museum's collections encompass local history, natural sciences, and fine and decorative arts. The first museum gallery is dedicated to the geological and environmental formation of the Herefordshire landscape. Visitors can observe how the land was shaped through various eras. This section provides the physical context for the region's subsequent human activity.
A second gallery, provisionally named “Life on the Edge,” focuses on archaeological finds. This space houses significant artefacts, including the Herefordshire Hoard of Dark Ages finds. These objects offer a direct connection to the early medieval period in the county. The gallery is designed to present these items within their historical context.
The Inspiring Creativity Gallery focuses on local handiwork and fine art. The collection includes a range of objects from tiles to textiles. This space also accommodates various artworks held within the museum's permanent collection. The selection reflects the diverse creative output of the local area.

Recent Projects and Redevelopment
The museum and art gallery is currently closed to the public for a major redevelopment. This full-scale project commenced on 18 July 2023. The initiative aims to restore and enhance the historic building for future generations. Funding for these works is provided by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, which contributed £5m, alongside £8m from Herefordshire Council and £5m from the Stronger Towns Fund.
The scope of the redevelopment has undergone significant revisions. Current plans for the building no longer include the construction of a new upper floor or the installation of roof terraces. These changes follow a reassessment of the project's scale and economic requirements. Consequently, the total project spending is set to run £14m over the original budget of £20.5m.
