    Installation View — Carsten Höller

    Carsten HöllerBorn in Brussels, Belgium, in 1961.He lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden, and Biriwa, Ghana.Works (from left to right):Slide House Project (Central Business District Corner House, Singapore)Slide House Project (River Reflective High Rise, Singapore)Slide House Project (Independence Monument, Accra No. 3/1)Slide House Project (Limete Monument, Kinshasa)Slide House Project (Central Business District Airport Tower House, Singapore)Slide House Project (Cedi House, Accra)Slide House Project (Central Business District High Rise, Singapore)Carsten Höller’s impressive tubular metal sculptures are certainly his best-known body of work. Spectators are invited to take a joyful ride in his corkscrewing slides, which provoke simultaneous sensations of anxiety, freedom, and excitement—responses that are unusual in the traditionalmuseum or gallery setting. Höller is part of a generation of artists who want to reimagine the experience of art. Behind his career as an artist, he has an unusual background, with a doctorate in agricultural science, and specializing in the olfactory communication strategies of insects. As a sculptor and installation artist, Höller creates situations that destabilize the spectator’s sense of control and visual perception. His objective is to enable the spectator to experience the familiar anew. To do so, he creates situations that often remind gallery visitors of the apparatus in a scientific laboratory, inviting them to become the subjects of the experiment. At one point in his career, large sculptural mushrooms became his trademark. Since then, however, he has featured many other elements in his work, such as animals, toys, the double, vehicles, a sensory deprivation pool, eyewear, narcotics, food, and a range of other methods to synchronize or manipulate the moods and emotions of the audience. At the 56th Biennale di Venezia, Höller is represented with a series of new photographic collages that offer an insight into his visionary ideas. These images respond to the architecture of Accra, Ghana, and highlight its utopian qualities. Also exhibited is his Fara Fara, a two-channel video installation, each channel dedicated to one of two rival musicians from Kinshasa’s vibrant music scene. This presentation alludes to a long-standing tradition in Congolese music in which two rival musicians perform simultaneously with their respective bands, each trying to animate and impress the crowd, which can include more than 150,000 people. Fara Fara shows the immense power and beauty of Congolese music while offering insightful observations on the context, history, and political impact of this specific subculture. A highlight of his presentation at the Biennale is RB Ride, a colorful, continuous carousel car ride that has been modified to run so slowly (taking fifteen minutes to complete a full rotation) that its riders can mount and dismount while it is moving.

    Carsten Höller

    生誕地 Germany

    The Architect of Sensory Experience

    Carsten Höller, born in Germany in 1961, stands as a visionary figure whose work transcends the traditional boundaries of fine art to merge the realms of science, psychology, and immersive installation. His practice is not merely about the creation of objects to be viewed from a distance, but rather the construction of environments designed to provoke contemplation and challenge the very foundations of human perception. Often described through the lens of relational aesthetics, Höller’s approach centers on fostering a profound dialogue between the artwork and its audience, transforming sterile gallery spaces into living laboratories where emotional responses and cognitive processes are actively stimulated.

    The artist's unique perspective is deeply rooted in his scientific background. Before emerging as a prominent force in the contemporary art world during the late 1980s, Höller worked as a research entomologist, holding a doctorate in agricultural science from the University of Kiel. This rigorous training in studying the olfactory communication strategies of insects profoundly informs his artistic methodology. In his work, he often adopts the persona of a scientist conducting mock experiments, utilizing materials and structures that mimic laboratory arrangements to turn the exhibition visitor into a subject of investigation. This intersection of empirical precision and creative speculation allows him to explore themes of uncertainty, chance, and the limits of human understanding.

    A Journey Through Experimentation and Perception

    Höller’s artistic evolution began with formal studies in graphic design and sculpture at the Braunschweig Hochschule für Grafik und Druck Gestaltung, followed by postgraduate work at Goldsmiths College London. These formative years instilled in him a fascination for experimentation and a commitment to questioning established conventions. Influenced by the conceptual rigor of Marcel Duchamp and Joseph Kosuth, Höller adopted a philosophy that prioritizes the process over the final product, emphasizing how materiality and randomness can generate unexpected artistic outcomes.

    His rise to international prominence in the 1990s saw him working alongside a cohort of influential artists who sought to reimagine the spatial experience of art. His work during this period began to encompass an extraordinary range of media, including:

    Architectural interventions that manipulate light and shadow;

    Mechanical structures such as his famous series of corkscrewing tubular metal slides;

    Sensory tools like darkened rooms, mirrors, and even sensory deprivation tanks;

    Biological motifs that play with the viewer's sense of reality and danger.

    One of his most iconic achievements remains the installation “Test Site” (2006) at the Tate Modern in London. By installing a monumental slide that traversed the gallery space, Höller invited visitors to surrender to gravity, creating a moment of deliberate disorientation and physical exhilaration. This project solidified his reputation as a pioneer of immersive art, proving that the sensation of movement and the visceral experience of one's own body could serve as powerful artistic mediums.

    The Intersection of Surrealism and Science

    The aesthetic language of Carsten Höller is characterized by a playful yet unsettling blend of Surrealism and Pop Art. He possesses a singular ability to use familiar, even whimsical, elements to evoke deep-seated psychological responses. His work often explores the concept of the "double" and the manipulation of scale, reminiscent of the dreamlike logic found in Alice in Wonderland. This is evident in pieces like Doppelpilzvitrine (24 Doppelpilze), where polyurethane models of mushrooms are presented in a way that mimics genetic experimentation, blurring the line between scientific truth and pure imagination.

    Through his use of mirrored surfaces, light-altering technologies, and interactive installations, Höller creates "influential environments" that force the viewer to confront their own perceptions. He invites us to step into a space where the boundaries between the known and the unknown are blurred, encouraging a state of wonder and curiosity. Ultimately, his historical significance lies in his ability to transform the act of viewing art into an act of becoming—where the spectator is no longer a passive observer but an active participant in a grand, ongoing experiment of human consciousness.

    ラ・ビエンナーレ・ディ・ヴェネツィア

    展示中: Venice, Italy

    ヴェネツィア・ビエンナーレ:時を超える創造の交差点

    ヴェネツィア、その名はロマンスと芸術の息吹を運ぶ。迷宮のような水路に囲まれたこの街には、現代アートの鮮やかな鼓動が宿っている。ヴェネツィア・ビエンナーレは単なる美術展覧会ではない。それは、絵画の繊細な筆致からパフォーマンスアートの挑発的な深淵、建築、そして常に進化するデジタルメディアまで、様々な分野を横断する、広大で没入感あふれる体験である。1895年にヴェネツィアの卓越した職人技—きらめくガラス吹き、精緻なレース編み、そして熟練した造船術—を祝うために設立されたビエンナーレは、すぐに現代美術の革新的なプラットフォームへと変貌し、モダニズムを受け入れ、変化の重要な触媒となった。今日、ビエンナーレは、ヴェネツィアの古代の威厳と前衛芸術の大胆な実験の間で揺れ動きながら、人間の表現と文化交流に対する深遠な探求を招き、その進化の証となっている。

    庭園(ジアルディニ):国家のタペストリー

    この並外れたイベントの中心にあるのは、広大な公園地であるジアルディニ・ヴェネツィア。そこは国際的な協力の象徴として変貌し、まるで宝石を散りばめた王冠のように、各国が丹念に作り上げた30もの象徴的な国家パビリオンが点在する。これらは単なる建物ではない。熟練した職人の静かな瞑想を反映した親密なアトリエ、国家間の外交の厳粛さを放つ壮大なホール、あるいは国の芸術的アイデンティティを大胆に宣言する印象的な建築声明など、それぞれが慎重に設計された空間である。ジアルディニ・ヴェネツィアを散策することは、文化と芸術運動間の視覚的な対話であり、何世紀にもわたる伝統のこだまが現代美学の鮮やかな表現とともに共存する機会となる。イタリアの豪華なバロック様式のファサードと日本の驚くほどモダンなデザインとの対比、あるいはスペインの厳粛な威厳とドイツの革新へのコミットメントとのコントラストは、多様な芸術的伝統の収束を祝うビエンナーレの取り組みを語る、予想外の調和のとれたタペストリーを生み出す。この広がりの中に位置するパッラッツォ・フォルトゥーニは、ヴェネツィアの芸術性を示す息を呑むような証拠である。何世代にもわたって注意深く保存されてきた精緻なフレスコ画は、驚くべき細部でヴェネツィアの生活を描き出し、日本の美学原則を反映した床の複雑な幾何学的パターンは、カナルレットの街の描写における熟練した筆致と調和のとれたハーモニーを生み出す。この意図的な影響のブレンドは、ビエンナーレが対話を促進し、多様な芸術的伝統の収束を祝うという取り組みを雄弁に物語っている。

    アルセナーレ:産業と想像力の融合

    ジアルディニ・ヴェネツィアの穏やかな美しさから一歩踏み出すと、革新の精神を体現するアルセナーレ・ヴェネツィアの変容的な力を目の当たりにする。かつては賑やかな海軍造船所であり、ヴェネツィアの海上支配と経済的繁栄の重要な動脈であったこの産業の中心地は、記念碑的な建築的遺物と最先端の現代インスタレーションが共存するダイナミックなハブとして生まれ変わった。アルセナーレの広大な規模は、真に没入型の体験を可能にし、訪問者は運河で飾られた広大なホールを散策し、大規模な芸術的取り組みのための舞台として再利用されたスペースを探求するように招待される。アームメント・ホール(Sale d'Armi)やロープメイキング・ワークショップ(Corderie)は、そびえ立つ天井とむき出しのレンガ造りで、過ぎ去った時代の残滓であり、歴史、産業、創造性の関係を問いかける野心的なプロジェクトのためのキャンバスとして機能する。アーティストはこれらの生の工業的空間を利用して、私たちの認識に挑戦し、視覚的に魅力的で概念的に深遠なインスタレーションを生み出す。アルセナーレは単なる展示スペースではなく、革新者としてのヴェネツィアの永続的な遺産を思い起こさせる力強いリマインダーであり、常に変革の可能性を受け入れてきた都市である。

    芸術的対話の遺産

    その輝かしい歴史を通じて、ビエンナーレは常に芸術的傾向を形作る上で重要な推進力となってきた。1964年の展覧会は転換点となり、ポップアートを国際的な舞台に紹介し、ヴェネツィアを最先端運動のための重要な拠点として確立した。ハラルド・スゼーマンの画期的な1980年ビエンナーレは概念芸術とパフォーマンス作品を擁護し、芸術的表現の従来の概念に挑戦し、何が「アート」と見なされるかの境界線を押し広げた。近年では、ビエンナーレは疎外された声の増幅と気候変動から移住者の権利まで、差し迫った地球規模の問題への対処を優先しており、芸術の領域における社会的責任へのコミットメントを反映している。サムソン・カンバルの「ニャウ・シネマ」のように、アフリカの遺産を探求するために映画と写真を組み合わせた展覧会や、労働、政治、イメージ操作のテーマを調査するアントエ・エーマン&ハルン・ファロッキの共同制作映画は、芸術的対話への献身と社会的反響を示す例である。これらの展示は単なるディスプレイではなく、視聴者に複雑なアイデアや視点に取り組むように招待し、批判的な検討を促し、世界に対するより深い理解を育む慎重にキュレーションされた会話である。

    時を超えて:カナルレットから現代のビジョナリーへ

    ビエンナーレの遺産を探求すると、芸術的実践と文化的意識における広範な変化を反映した魅力的な進化が見られる。ヴェネツィアの職人技の初期の受容からポップアートや概念主義の大胆な実験まで、ビエンナーレは常に革新を推進し、確立された規範に挑戦してきた。カナルレットの「サン・ピエトロ・デッラ・カステロ教会の外での夜間の祝典」(通称「ラ・ヴィジリア・ディ・サン・ピエトロ」)は、ヴェネツィアの賑やかなナイトライフシーンを驚くべき細部で捉え、カナルレットのヴェドゥータ絵画の技術に対する証となっている。同様に、ハーマン・アーマー・ウェブスターの「ラ・カーサ・ディ・マリオ」は、ヴェネツィアの建築的景観の中で記憶とアイデンティティのテーマを探求し、ビエンナーレが芸術を通じて人間の経験を調査することへの永続的なコミットメントを示している。博物館の確立された巨匠と新進気鋭の声の両方を展示することへの継続的な献身は、ビエンナーレが芸術的発見と批判的な関与のための重要なプラットフォームであり続け、世代を超えて創造性と文化交流のビーコンとしての役割を果たし続けていることを保証する。
