Jean-Baptiste Claudot was born in Badonviller, France, into a family with roots in the Nobles of the Robe. His father worked as a lawyer and eventually held a seat in the Parlement de Nancy. He spent his early years learning the mechanics of paint, eventually moving to Paris in 1767 to refine his skills. Though he had the opportunity to remain in the center of the art world, he chose to return home in 1769, settling back into the life of the provinces.
His brush often found its way to the crumbling stones of the past. He moved through several locations, finding subjects in Nancy, Lunéville, Bayon, Metz, and Pont-à-Mousson.
