Anvers, 1789. The air in the city carries the weight of a changing era as Hendrik Josef Franciscus Van der Poorten enters the world. He is the son of Antoine Van der Poorten, a merchant, and Anne Marie Kets. His early years are rooted in this Belgian landscape, a foundation that later informs his focus on the natural world. The path toward the easel begins at the Académie royale des beaux-arts d'Anvers, where he sits under the guidance of Guillaume Herreyns. His works find their way into permanent collections that preserve his vision of the nineteenth-century landscape, including the Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Gand, and the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.
