A Life in Light and Shadow
Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1871, Emil Krause developed a way of seeing the world that focused on the quiet, lived-in corners of existence. He was a man of many mediums, moving between the brush and the etching needle with a natural ease. His training began under Axel Hou, a foundation that allowed him to explore the nuances of light and the textures of everyday life. He had a particular affinity for the older quarters of Copenhagen, capturing the way sunlight might strike a narrow street or a weathered facade.
His work often turned toward the intimate. He painted interiors that felt lived-in and portraits that captured the essence of those closest to him, including a portrait of his wife in 1904. There was a certain stillness in his compositions, a sense of a moment caught before it could change. Whether he was documenting a bustling scene or a solitary figure, his hand was guided by a desire to record the atmosphere of a place.
The Breadth of His Vision
Krause's interests were not limited to a single subject or a single way of seeing. His output reflected a curiosity about both the grander landscape and the smallest human detail. His technical skill allowed him to move through different genres with ease:
- Landscape paintings that captured specific locales, such as his work of St Malo, Ville Close.
- Genre scenes that depicted the social fabric of his time.
- Portraits that explored the character of his subjects.
- Etchings that utilized his keen sense of light and shadow.
In 1928, he shared more of his inner world through a collection of drawings and verses titled Byen paa Kryds og Tværs, København. This publication showed that his artistic impulse was tied to the very rhythm of the city he called home.
A Quiet Legacy
By the time of his death in 1945 in Farum, Krause had established himself as a painter who understood the weight of a shadow and the warmth of a well-placed light. He did not seek to overwhelm, but rather to observe. His paintings, such as those held in the National Library of Wales, remain as records of a specific time and place, preserved through his careful application of oil on canvas.
