Desmond Morris lived a life defined by two seemingly different worlds: the rigorous study of animal behavior and the dreamlike realms of surrealist painting. Born on 24 January 1928 in Purton, Wiltshire, his early years were shaped by an interest in natural history that would later define his career as a zoologist and ethologist. It was not until later years that the breadth of his visual work received wider recognition. His paintings eventually found homes in significant collections, including the Tate in London and the National Galleries of Scotland.
By the time he passed away on 19 April 2026, he was recognized as one of the last surviving artists of the original Surrealist movement.
