Billy Al Bengston:生涯と作品
The Surface of the Machine
Billy Al Bengston moved from Dodge City, Kansas, to Los Angeles in 1948. His hands learned the textures of the West Coast through more than just brushes. He spent time as a professional motorcycle racer and a surfer, lives that brought the smell of gasoline and salt air into his practice. In the late 1950s and 1960s, he began working with materials that belonged in a garage rather than a studio. He used sprayed layers of automobile lacquer on aluminum sheets, applying colors that felt psychedelic and shapes that resembled mandalas.
The work often carried the weight of California's custom car and motorcycle culture. He took industrial tools and applied them to fine art, using techniques like denting, hammering, folding, and puncturing metal. This led to the creation of his Dentos series, where the aluminum surfaces were physically altered in unpredictable patterns. These pieces reflected a fascination with the glossy, hard-edged aesthetics of the era.
Patterns and Motifs
Certain shapes appeared repeatedly across his canvases and sculptures. After seeing work at the 1958 Venice Biennale, he adopted the motif of sergeant's stripes, or chevrons. These stripes were often placed centrally, a choice that challenged traditional painting rules. He also used hearts and iris flowers as recurring symbols.
In the 1970s, his focus shifted toward the iris. He created the Dracula series, where silhouettes of these flowers were surrounded by overlapping circles. These works drew inspiration from simple, everyday objects, such as the logo on sugar packets from the Iris Sugar Company. The petals often appeared extended, creating a sense of depth through layers of translucent lacquer.
A Presence in Los Angeles
Bengston was part of a specific circle of artists associated with the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles. He showed there frequently between 1958 and 1963, alongside figures like Ed Ruscha and Robert Irwin. His work helped define the visual language of the postwar Los Angeles scene, blending the aesthetics of West Coast Pop and Finish Fetish.
His career spanned decades and took him between Venice, California, and Honolulu, Hawaii. His pieces found places in permanent collections such as:
- Museum of Modern Art, New York
- Los Angeles County Museum of Art
- San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
- Guggenheim Museum, New York
- Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris
- Whitney Museum of American Art, New York
