August Cappelen: un ritratto dell'artista

La Vita di August Cappelen

Hermann August Cappelen è stato un pittore norvegese nato a Skien, in Norvegia. Figlio di Diderik von Cappelen e Margaret Noble Severine Henriette Løvenskiold, apparteneva a stirpi profondamente radicate nel tessuto sociale del tempo, tra commercianti, proprietari terrieri, funzionari pubblici e figure politiche. Cresciuto all'interno della tenuta di Holden, una dimora signorile a Ulefoss nel distretto di Grenland, in Telemark, la sua formazione artistica lo portò successivamente a Düsseldorf. Qui, tra il 1846 e il 1850, frequentò la classe di pittura di paesaggio presso la Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, studiando sotto la guida del maestro Johann Wilhelm Schirmer.

Il suo percorso professionale fu scandito da intensi viaggi di studio attraverso la Norvegia, toccando il comune di Lom in Gudbrandsdalen, Sogn e Hardanger. Le sue tele catturavano l'essenza vibrante dei paesaggi naturali, popolati da foreste, laghi e ruscelli, dove l'artista utilizzava tonalità profonde di verde muschio per dare vita a forme primordiali come alberi e montagne. Il suo periodo di maggiore fecondità creativa si collocò tra il 1850 e il 1852, un interruzione tragica prima che la morte, causata da un cancro gastrico, lo cogliesse a Düsseldorf all'età di soli 25 anni.
