Andreas Schelfhout iniziò il suo percorso artistico in modo non convenzionale. Inizialmente lavorando come pittore edile all'interno dell'attività di incorniciatura del padre, dimostrò un precoce talento artistico creando dipinti nel tempo libero. Una prima mostra di successo all'Aia portò il padre a mandarlo a ricevere una formazione formale con Joannes Breckenheimer, un costruttore di scenografie teatrali. Questa educazione non si concentrava esclusivamente sulle tecniche pittoriche; Schelfhout intraprese anche studi dettagliati delle opere dei maestri olandesi del XVII secolo come Meindert Hobbema e Jacob van Ruisdael, ponendo le basi per il suo stile paesaggistico.
Nel 1815, Schelfhout aprì la sua officina, ottenendo rapidamente riconoscimento per la sua abilità tecnica, il senso compositivo e l'uso naturalistico del colore. Divenne membro del Pulchri Studio e raggiunse importanti traguardi tra cui una medaglia d'oro all'esposizione di Anversa nel 1819 e l'ammissione alla Royal Academy for Visual Arts di Amsterdam nel 1818. Le scene invernali di Schelfhout, in particolare quelle raffiguranti canali ghiacciati con pattinatori, furono estremamente popolari durante la sua vita.
