La Vita di un Pittore di Marine Nato ad Alkmaar, nei Paesi Bassi, Jan Theunisz Blanckerhoff entrò in un mondo in cui il mare rappresentava sia una fonte di sussistenza che una sorgente di costante movimento. I suoi primi anni furono plasmati dalla guida di Arent Teerling, un artista della sua città natale che gli fornì le prime lezioni formali. Crescendo, la sua formazione si espanse sotto la tutela di Pieter Scheyenburg e, successivamente, di Cesar van Everdingen. Fu proprio Everdingen a incoraggiarlo a guardare oltre gli orizzonti familiari dei Paesi Bassi per intraprendere il viaggio, una decisione che avrebbe cambiato radicalmente il corso della sua carriera.
