changing social fabric of Britain at the turn of the century. He was born on October 1, 1916 in the small farming community of Canon, Georgia, the son of William Thomas and Elva Owens Cartledge. In 1930 Cartledge and his family moved to Atlanta where he attended Boys’ High School. After graduation, he worked as a cotton merchandiser at Anderson Clayton Company while attending law school.
