Justus Sustermans nemzetközi hírnevet szerzett elsősorban a Medicei család tagjainak portréival, amelynek köszönhetően megtérkezett a rangos udvari művész szerepkörbe. Ezek a festmények Sustermans képességét példázzák, miközben a komplex karakterjellemzőket vizuálisan magával ragadó kompozíciókba tudta fojtani – ami művészi tudásának ékes bizonyítéka. A portrékon túlmutatva Sustermans művei rendkívüli változatosságot mutatnak: a történelmi festményektől kezdve a mindennapi életet ábrázoló genre-jelenetekig, a apróházi részletgazdag natureszenekig és a tudományos megfigyeléssel átitatott állatstudiekiig terjedő alkotásokat hozott létre. Monumentális alkotása, a *Ferdinando II de’ Medici hűségét bezegyező florentin senátus*, amelyet maga a nagydukánál kémelték, egyszerre tükrözi ambícióját és technikai mesteri tudását; ez a hatalmas méretű vászon a florentin történelem egy döntő pillanatát őrzi meg. Emellett Sustermans Galileo Galilei portréit a koruk tudományos zsenialitásának egyik legpszichológiailag élesebb és mélyebb ábrázolásai közé sorolják.

Hatáskör és örökség

Justus Sustermans jelentős hatást gyakorolt a következő művészgenerációkra, különösen Anthony van Dyck-ra, aki nagyra voltásolt Sustermans merész stílusát és kifejező technikáját. A részletekre való precíz figyelme és a chiaroscuro – a fény és árnyék mesteri használata – számos olyan festő számára volt forrás, aki a holland aranykor művészvilágában alkotott. Sustermans öröksége azonban túlmutat egyéni műalkotásokon; létrehozott egy olyan műhelyt, amely számos híres festmény másolatát is készítette – a barokk korszakban elterjedt gyakorlat – ezzel hozzájárulva a művészeti gondolatok egész Európa szerte történő terjedéséhez. A Medici család portréjai ma is lenyűgözik a közönséget, hogyatlanul értékes betekintést nyitva a 17. századi olasz kulturális és politikai világra. Sustermans hozzájárulása a művészettörténethez a barokk portréfestészet egyik alapköveként emlékezik meg, biztosítva helyét korántól is legfelbecsültebb művészek sorában.
