His early works, such as Fight between two young typos and Young plasterer, were showcased at the Salon de Nancy. Royer was a painter of genre, portraitist, and landscape artist. In 1896, he moved to Brittany, where he spent much of his life, particularly near Audierne. His work focused on the people of the region, and he learned to speak Breton to better understand them. His paintings are noted for their careful attention to local costumes. As a devout Catholic, he also produced religious subjects, including solitary figures in prayer.
