A magyar művészettörténészek és a szépség szerelmesei egyaránt csodálhatják Andreas Schelfhout munkáit, a holland romantika egyik legkiemelkedőbb képviselőjét. 1787-ben született a hajdani The Hague városban, és 1870-ben, majdnem százéves élet után elhunyt ugyanitt. Schelfhout nem egyedül alkotott, hanem egy egész generáció művészetének formálásában is jelentős szerepet játszott, a holland festészet fejlődését meghatározva.
Schelfhout pályája egy rendkívül érdekes úton indult. Kezdetben háznak festett, apja keretgyárában dolgozott, de a szabadidejében már saját művészeti alkotásokat is készített. Első kiállítása a hajdani The Hague-ban nagy sikert aratott, és apja azonnal küldte tanulni Joannes Breckenheimerhez, egy színpadi díszítő mesteréhez. Ez a képzés nem csupán festési technikákat tanított, hanem arra is utasította, hogy tanulmányozza a 17. századi holland mesterműveket, különösen Meindert Hobbemát és Jacob van Ruisdaelt – ez volt az alapja Schelfhout sajátos stílusának.
1815-ben nyitotta meg saját műhelyét, azonnal elismerést szerzett technikusi képessége, kompozíciós érzéke és a természetes színek használata miatt. Tagja lett a Pulchri Studio-nak, és számos jelentős mérföldkőhöz ért: aranyérmet nyert az 1819-es antverpi kiállításon, és 1818-ban csatlakozott az Amsterdami Művészeti Akadémiához. Schelfhout legnépszerűbb művei a téli tájképek, különösen azok, amelyek jégbe zárt csatornákat és patkányokat ábrázolnak. Ezek a képei népszerűek voltak az életében is, és nagy hatással voltak a későbbi generációkra.
Schelfhout művei mélyen gyökereztek a romantika mozgalmában, amely az érzelemre, a képzeletre és a természet fölényére helyezte a hangsúlyt. Tájképein gyakran láthatók drámai égbolt, atmoszfereképzet és egyfajta nyugalmi vagy mélánkoló hangulat. Bár befolyásolta az előbbi holland mestereket, Schelfhout sajátos stílusát fejlesztette ki, amely a holland vidéki táj egyedi hangulatának ábrázolására összpontosított.
