Richard Gerstl bio je austrijski slikar i crtač čija je kratka, ali intenzivna karijera postavila temelje ranog ekspresionizma. Međutim, daljnji sukobi s autoritetima, uključujući odbijanje sudjelovanja u imperialnoj procesiji, doveli su i do njegovog izbacivanja iz Hollósyjeve škole. Gerstlov stil obilježila je sirova intenzivnost i psihološka dubina koja ga je izdvajala od ostalih.
