Njegov put prema umjetničkom majstorstvu nije bio ravna linija, već duhovno istraživanje tradicije i moderniteta. Dok su prvotni nagoni sugerirali život u teološkim studijima, Astrupova strast prema crtanju odvela ga je iz katedralne škole u Trondheimu prema rastućoj umjetničkoj sceni u Kristianii (Oslo). Upravo je tamo, pod utjecajnim mentorstvom Harriet Backer, počeo usavršavati svoje tehničke vještine.
