Early Life, Family and Training Born on 24 November 1861 in Sasbach, Baden, Germany, Franz Gräßel spent his formative years amidst the steady rhythms of a mill near Obersasbach. This childhood environment, shaped by the practicalities of rural life, provided the foundation for his later observations of the natural world. Before he ever took up a brush for professional study, he attended the higher Bürgerschule in the neighboring town o
f Achern, where he began to cultivate the discipline required for a life in the arts. His formal training began in earnest when he arrived at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe.
