Umjetnik
Rođeni u Süderau, Njemačka
Rani život, obitelj i obuka
Putovanja i umjetnički pokreti
Akademsko vodstvo i reforme
Značajna djela i teme

The History of Schloss Weimar
The origins of Schloss Weimar reach back to the end of the 10th century, when a medieval moated castle first occupied this site. This early structure established a presence that would evolve through many centuries of transformation. The building has been developed over the past 500 years, leaving layers of history within its walls. It remains the oldest building of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar.
From the middle of the 16th century, the palace served as the residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Weimar. This period saw the site become a central location for the regional nobility. The residence of the Grand Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach continued from 1809 until the German revolution of 1918–1919. Throughout these eras, the palace functioned as a seat of power and a center for the local court.
The site has undergone significant changes due to fire and reconstruction. A fire in 1424 necessitated remodeling, and another fire in 1618 led to a reconstruction that began in 1619. These events shaped the physical presence of the palace as it transitioned from its medieval roots toward the structures seen today. The palace is located at the north end of the town's park along the Ilm river, within the Park an der Ilm.
The Architecture of the Palace
Situated at the north end of the town's park along the Ilm river, the building occupies a prominent position within the Park an der Ilm. Its physical form has been shaped by a series of reconstructions following fires in 1424 and 1618. The latter event necessitated a reconstruction beginning in 1619, a project directed by architects Giovanni Bonalino and Costantino de' Servi.
The structure underwent significant stylistic shifts over the centuries. In the 1650s, Wilhelm, Duke of Saxe-Weimar, commissioned Johann Moritz Richter to modify the design into a symmetrical Baroque structure. This iteration featured three wings oriented toward the south. Following a fire in 1774, the 17th-century Baroque palace was replaced by the Neoclassical structure that defines the site today.
The Schlossmuseum Collections
The Schlossmuseum focuses on paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries alongside works of art tied to the history of Weimar. On the ground floor, the collection presents Renaissance paintings and medieval sacred art. This level also holds works by Lucas Cranach the Elder and Lucas Cranach the Younger, reflecting the artistic activity that once took place within the palace's own walls.
The upper floor is organized within representative rooms that contain paintings from the period of Goethe. These spaces offer a sense of the atmosphere present during that era. Moving to the top floor, the collection shifts toward the 19th-century Weimarer Malerschule and contemporary art. The progression through the building follows a chronological movement from the late Middle Ages to the modern age.
Hutten's Grave, 1823 - Caspar David Friedrich
Rouen Cathedral 02, 1894 - Claude Monet
Self-Portrait, 1640 - Rembrandt
Autumnal Forest, 1895 - Theodor Hagen
Masterpieces of the Collection
The presence of these works within the Schlossmuseum offers a quiet encounter with the evolution of European painting. One finds the heavy, spiritual weight of Geertgen tot Sint Jans' Visitation, dated 1500, alongside the profound psychological depth of Rembrandt’s 1640 Self-Portrait. These pieces do not merely occupy space; they command it through a stillness that invites long observation. The collection moves from the early Renaissance into the dramatic intensity of the Baroque, where Peter Paul Rubens’ God the Father and Christ with Sts Paul and John, executed between 1616 and 1617, asserts a powerful, divine presence.
The landscape tradition is represented through varied perspectives and eras. Caspar David Friedrich’s Hutten's Grave (1823) provides a somber meditation on mortality, while Claude Monet’s Rouen Cathedral 02 (1894) captures the shifting qualities of light upon stone. Arnold Böcklin’s At Krazenbach in Unterwalden (1847) offers a different, perhaps more pastoral, engagement with the natural world. These works exist in a dialogue that spans centuries of changing perception.
Other significant holdings include:
Self-Sacrifice of Marcus Curtius, 1530 - Hans Baldung Grien
Self-portrait, 1776 - Willem van de Velde the Younger
Visiting the Palace and Museum
The building, now known as Stadtschloss to distinguish it from other palaces in the vicinity, remains the oldest structure within the Klassik Stiftung Weimar. It occupies a central position within the World Heritage Site "Classical Weimar" at the north end of the Park an der Ilm. The site functions as a repository for the Schlossmuseum, which was established in 1923. This museum focuses on the history of the region through its holdings of paintings from the 15th to the 19th centuries.
Within the palace, the atmosphere is shaped by the presence of four specific rooms. These spaces are dedicated to the memory of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Johann Gottfried Herder, Friedrich Schiller, and Christoph Martin Wieland. These rooms offer a connection to the intellectual history of the site. The architecture and the museum collections exist together in a space that has been continuously occupied and modified since the middle of the 16th century.
